Judy has been taking workshops in watercolor from various artists for over 15 years. It was only upon retirement from the architectural profession a few years ago that she began painting watercolor more seriously. Judy’s work has recently been accepted into shows and recognized for her talent.

Judy was born in Los Angeles and during high school asked her art teacher if she should study art or architecture in college. Her teacher replied that “she could always be an artist”. So, she attended Architecture school in San Luis Obispo at California State Polytechnic University where she completed both a Bachelors and Masters of Architecture. Judy moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid-seventies and soon obtained her architectural license and worked as an architect for over 45 years. Her highest achievement was becoming a FAIA (Fellow in the American Institute of Architects) recognizing her contribution to the profession. Judy’s experiences as an architect also complements her painting with drawing techniques, a good sense of composition and refined critical thinking skills.

For several years, Judy has taken weekly watercolor classes with Leslie Wilson, CWA. Leslie has helped Judy hone the “craft” of watercolor along with gaining a greater understanding of the “art” of the painting, focusing on value, color, soft/hard edges, composition, loosening up and “knowing when to stop painting”.

Over the years Judy has also taken watercolor workshops from several well-known artists; Charles Reid, Mel Stabin, Michael Reardon, David Savellano, David Lobenberg, Thomas Schaller, Myrna Wacknov, Birgit O’Connor and Pablo Villacana Lura. Judy has compiled a treasure trove of skills and techniques gained from observing firsthand all of these artists. Her paintings style is also inspired by John Singer Sargent, Tony Couch, N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth and Winslow Homer.
